Summer Camp 2013

Sblogummer is around the corner.  And that can only mean one thing — it is almost time for Banana Kelly’s SUMMER CAMP!

As these images can attest our youth had an amazing experience last year.    Banana Kelly’s summer camp provided children from the area with an opportunity to take day trips to local muphoto 07seums and other cultural institutions where they were exposed to culture, history and technology.  During the summer campers obtained new experiences, developed special bonds, explored career paths and most importantly had fun. Last summer our campers were able to take advantage of different forms of career exploration through classroom instruction and motivating speakers.  Children had the opportunity to meet college students who came from the same neighborhoods and backgrounds and who spoke with them about positive college experiences.  Athletes who were either semi pro or pro and who benefited from similar summer programs as well as business professionals also provided positive encouragement to our children.

photo bThis summer we intend to do more.  Banana Kelly’s Summer Camp include field trips to locations within and outside the community; trips that will open up children to new experiences that normally they would not have experienced.  We hope to take advantage of our partnership with National Baseball Hall of Fame (which sponsors our newly created After School Program) to schedule a trip to Yankee Stadium.  Through our partnership with Bette Midler’s New York Restoration Project our children will have the chance to participate in interactive gardening/greening workshops.

Because of continued budget cuts and prohibitive participation fees at other camps, many of our South Bronx children will not have the opportunity to be engaged in positive programs on a daily basis.  Parents will not have a safe place for their children this summer, putting additional strains on parents who can ill afford to take time off from work and other duties.  Banana Kelly believes that having a summer program for our area children is vitally important.

We hope you will consider making a donation to Banana Kelly’s Summer Camp 2013.  Your support will keep our young people safe and productive this summer.  We are keeping the cost to the families at a minimum.  Parents will be charged only $150 per child so that we will be able to reach the families most in need of this service.  Banana Kelly will need to raise an additional $50,000 to cover the remaining cost of the camp. Please consider these youngsters of the South Bronx as an extension of your own community and support them as they learn the importance of teamwork and cooperation through summer camp activities.

Thank you again for your support.  Please send your donation to Banana Kelly 863 Prospect Avenue, Bronx NY 10459.  Also feel free to contact Hope Burgess 718.328-1064, if you have any questions or if you need to receive additional information. Banana Kelly is a registered 501c3 non profit organization.
