Workshop Description:
The history of New York City has taught us that if there is one constant in New York City, it is change. People come, people go. Some settle and stay for generations. Others do not. But history has also taught us when government makes that change, the most vulnerable and most politically disenfranchised among us suffer. Urban renewal destroyed neighborhoods, displacing countless numbers of people, including over 100,000 African Americans. Redlining deprived neighborhoods of financial resources, causing the deterioration of hundreds of neighborhoods. Planned shrinkage deprived those same and other neighborhoods of essential government, including emergency response, services, promoting disinvestment, abandonment and arson. And now rezoning is working it way into the Bronx, on many fronts, threatening again to potentially cause massive displacement in communities of color.
